SEO: What does it really mean?
For many years I have gotten these question…
- What is SEO?
- Should I pay this XYZ company that promises to have me in the top rankings in less than a week?
- How can I get my site in the top ranking today?
The answer to the first question is Search Engine Optimization. It is the practice that allows search engines to easily access a website for information used to help potential visitors view content related to his or her search criteria. From this perspective, the key to optimizing your web content is to first decide who is your audience then figure out if what you are providing has any uniqueness against what is already out there.
The answer to the second question is this. There is nothing wrong with paying a company to assist in optimizing your web content especially if you do not have the time or patience to do it yourself (Note the words I emphasized). You may be thinking there’s a “But” coming somewhere in this statement and there is. BUT, there is no sure fire way that a company can guarantee you will be in the top rankings for long. Not unless they are physically tweaking your site, maintaining your content to make sure it reaches the appropriate audience, and controlling the other websites using the same or similar criteria to back off. SEO is an art but it is one that takes work, persistence, and time (sometimes months if not a year).
Ah the last question. Your answer…drum roll please!. Please see last sentence above. In all honesty, unless you are providing a product, service, or information that no one else hasn’t already mentioned, you information is going to take more than a day to propagate into any search engine.
I found the article, “The top 10 SEO myths,” rather interesting especially the statement below.
